Financial Consultation for Your Business: What to Expect and What to Walk Away With
A good financial consultation ends with decisions, not a pile of advice. Here is what it should cover, how to prepare and what to ask for in writing.
- Typical length
- 30 to 90 minutes for a first conversation
- Best prepared with
- Last 12 months of P&L, current cash balance and your biggest open question
- Should end with
- Prioritised actions, owners and dates, not general advice

Short answer: a financial consultation should leave you with a clear picture of your profit and cash, a short list of priorities and a next step you can act on within a week. If you leave with general advice and no numbers, the session did not do its job.
What a good consultation covers
Whatever the format, a useful business consultation works through four questions:
- Profit. Is the business actually making money after all costs, and which products or customers drive it?
- Cash. How much cash do you have, how fast is it moving, and where could a gap appear?
- Unit economics. What does it cost to win a customer, and what is that customer worth over time?
- Decisions. What is the next move on pricing, hiring, spending or funding, and what does the data say about it?
Revenue is not profit, so a good adviser will start with margins and cash, not top-line growth.
How to prepare
You do not need a perfect data room. Bring:
- Profit and loss for the last 12 months
- Current cash balance and upcoming large payments
- A list of your biggest costs
- Headline sales numbers by product or channel
- The one or two decisions you are stuck on
The last item matters most. A consultation focused on a real decision is worth more than a general review.
What you should walk away with
Ask for these in writing:
- A short summary of where the business stands on profit and cash
- The top three to five priorities, in order
- An owner and a date for each action
- Any numbers or model the adviser used, so you can check them
Warning signs of a weak consultation
- Advice before anyone has looked at your numbers
- Jargon you cannot repeat to your team
- No follow-up and no deliverables
- A hard sell for a long contract at the first meeting
Consultation or fractional CFO?
A one-off consultation suits a specific question: a pricing decision, a funding round, a model review. If your questions keep coming every month, a fractional CFO is usually better value, because the same person already knows your numbers.

What is a financial consultation?
A structured conversation with a finance professional about your numbers and decisions. For a business it usually covers profitability, cash, pricing, funding and what to do next.
How should I prepare for a financial consultation?
Bring recent profit and loss statements, your cash position, a list of your main costs and the one or two decisions you are stuck on.
Is a financial consultation the same as hiring a CFO?
No. A consultation answers a defined question. A fractional CFO works with you every month so the answers stay current as the business changes.
