Financial Audit vs Financial Health Check: Which One Do You Need?

Short answer

An audit checks whether your statements are fairly presented. A health check asks whether your finances support your plans. Most growing businesses need the second long before the first.

Short answer: an audit tells outsiders whether your numbers can be trusted. A financial health check tells you whether your business is in good shape to do what you plan. They overlap a little, but they answer different questions and are done by different people for different reasons.

What a financial audit does

An audit is an independent examination of your financial statements, usually performed by a licensed auditor. The result is an opinion on whether the statements are fairly presented. It is often required by law for companies above certain sizes, or requested by lenders, investors or buyers.

An audit looks backward. It tests records and controls for a past period. It does not tell you what to do next, and the auditor is not supposed to run your finances.

What a health check does

A health check is an advisory review. It asks practical questions:

  • Is cash being generated or consumed, and how long will it last?
  • Which products, customers or channels make money after variable costs?
  • Is reporting timely and accurate enough to make decisions?
  • Are there risks in debt, tax, concentration of customers or supplier terms?
  • Do the numbers support the growth plan?

The result is a short list of findings and priorities, not a formal opinion.

Who needs which

  • Early or small business: a health check is usually the more useful tool. An audit may not be required, so confirm with your accountant.
  • Preparing to raise money: a health check first, so you find and fix weak spots before investors do. Our guide to getting investor-ready lists what to prepare.
  • Larger or regulated company, or lender requirement: an audit, plus regular health checks in between.
  • Using a complex financial model: consider a separate review of the model itself. See Why Audit Financial Models.

Signs you are due for a health check

  1. Profit and bank balance tell different stories. See why revenue can grow while profit does not.
  2. You cannot say what cash will look like in three months.
  3. Month-end reports arrive late or nobody trusts them.
  4. A big decision is coming: a hire, a price change, a round.

What good preparation looks like

Have recent bank statements, the last twelve months of management accounts, a customer and supplier list with payment terms, debt agreements and your current budget or forecast. The cleaner these are, the faster the review.

Related questions

Is a financial health check the same as an audit?

No. An audit gives an independent opinion on whether statements are fairly presented. A health check is advisory and focuses on cash, margins, reporting quality and risks.

Do small businesses need an audit?

It depends on local law, size and what lenders or investors require. Check with your accountant. Many small businesses are not legally required to have one.

When is the best time for a health check?

Before raising money, before a major hiring or pricing decision, or when results no longer match what you feel is happening in the business.
